As crafters, we all have one thing in common—beads. Whether it's an assortment of leftover beads from previous projects, gifts, or impulse buys, beads tend to accumulate quickly. They may sit unused in your stash for months (or even years!) while you try to come up with ideas to turn them into something beautiful.

If you find yourself staring at a box full of beads and don’t know what to do with them, don't worry—it's time to get creative! Here are some helpful tips on organizing your stash, along with DIY jewelry project ideas to help you make the most of what you already have.

Step 1: Organizing Your Bead Stash

Before diving into new projects, organizing your bead stash can help you make clearer design decisions and spark creativity. This will also help you look through what you have and see if any pieces pull at your heartstrings or spark your creative fire. Here are some tips for organizing your beads:

  1. Sort By Color: Sorting beads by their color is a great way to see what colors you have a lot of and to develop color palettes based on the colors you have.
  2. Sort By Material: Sorting by material makes it easy to grab for what you need. Need a focal? Or something with stone or wood to balance the textures in your design? Having these labeled and separate can help make your design process flow smoother.
  3. Use Storage Containers: Choose containers that work best for you and your workspace. We're partial to multi-compartment containers as they allow you to sort by color or material all in one. Check out your local Dollar Tree or craft store for affordable storage options!
  4. Keep a Design Journal: Got an idea you don't want to loose? Grab a small sketchbook or notebook to keep track of your design ideas! Smaller sizes are great to fit in a purse or backpack for easy grabbing and sketching when your design idea presents itself to you!

Easy De-Stasher Bead Projects:

Here are three DIY jewelry projects you can create with beads from your stash to help spark your creativity! These projects use basic skills that help you design to prevent creative blocks.

Stretch bracelet and earrings by Wendy Whitman

DIY Simple Beaded Stretch Bracelet

A beaded stretch bracelet is a fantastic beginner project. It requires minimal tools and allows you to experiment with different beads without worrying about complex techniques. Stretch bracelets are great stash busters because they are easy to make and only require a few items. Check out this tutorial from Wendy Whitman here for a easy video tutorial on how to create a stretch bracelet.

Materials Needed:

  • Beads (any shape or size from your stash)
  • Stretch cord
  • Scissors
  • Optional: bead stopper (to keep beads from falling off while threading)

Tip: Experiment with color combinations and textures to create a truly personalized bracelet!

Wire-Wrapped Earrings

Use leftover beads to try out new wire-wrapping techniques! You can use your individual beads or bead pairs to create simple and beautiful earrings. Check out this video tutorial with Jem Hawkes, which shows 3 different recipes for wire-wrapped earrings to get inspired or learn some techniques to try!

Materials Needed:

  • Beads (larger than 12mm recommended)
  • 18 or 20-gauge wire
  • Round Nose Pliers, Bent Nose pliers, and wire-cutting tools
  • Jump Rings
  • Ear Wires

Tip: Use contrasting bead sizes or materials (like wood and metal) to create visual interest.

Beaded Necklace

Have a lot of beads that are the same style or size? Create an easy beaded necklace! You can incorporate other materials in this project as well such as scrap chain or wire to make your own accent pieces. Check out this tutorial by Deb Floros to learn how to create draped accents for necklaces.

Materials Needed:

  • Beads from your stash
  • Scraps of chain or focal beads
  • 19-strand stringing wire
  • Clasp
  • Seed Beads
  • Crimping Tools
  • Cutting Tool
  • Crimping Tubes

Non-Jewelry DIY Project Ideas:

If you're in the mood for something other than jewelry, beads can still be used to create fun and functional DIY projects. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Beaded Keychains: Use beads to make colorful and personalized keychains. You can attach them to key rings or even make a beaded tassel.

  2. Beaded Home Décor: Add beads to lampshades, curtains, or picture frames. Stringing beads along a string of twine or thread can create a boho-chic vibe for your home.

  3. Beaded Coasters: Combine beads with cork or felt to make vibrant beaded coasters. These make great gifts and can add a pop of color to your coffee table.

  4. Beaded Bookmarks: String a few beads onto a wire or string to create decorative bookmarks. These can be given as gifts or kept for personal use.

  5. Beaded Holiday Ornaments: Beads can be used to create ornaments for different seasons. Whether it's a beaded snowflake for Christmas or a flower for spring, these handmade decorations can add a personalized touch to your holiday décor.

Your bead stash doesn’t have to be a collection of forgotten materials. With a little creativity and organization, you can turn those beads into beautiful jewelry or even home décor items. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned crafter, there’s always something new you can make from your stash. So dive into your bead collection, get organized, and let your imagination guide you toward your next DIY project.
